The Lighting For This Guy’s Student Photo Wasn’t Right, So He Asked For a Reshoot –& Brought His Own Lights!

Bad school photos are just a rite of passage, right? This high school student was not having it. 17-year-old makeup artist and high school student James Charles says,

I woke up really early a week ago to get glam for my picture. I recently got into makeup and wanted to have a pretty iconic picture since I knew it would live forever with myself and all my friends at school.

I got there and posed for the photos. They came out okay but the lighting in the room was bad and my highlight was NOT on fleek.”

What did he do? Asked for a re-shoot, natch.

They totally understood and they let me come in and bring my lights with me that I have for my makeup photography. My ring light is what I use for my photos normally so I knew having it would make the highlight look better.

He tweeted the fab pic, and the rest is history.

It’s been absolutely ridiculous and crazy since I posted the picture. I thought they would do pretty well since my followers were so kind when I posted photos from the morning of the original shoot, but this all was extremely unexpected.

If you ask me THIS is the power of RuPaul’s Drag Race that Ru mentioned backstage after accepting his Emmy last night. An example to the world that nothing is too outrageous, if you believe in yourself –and bring your own lighting.

#BornThisDay: Actor/Singer, Nell Carter

carter-nell

September 13, 1948– Nell Carter:

“You know what’s a cliché? A black woman serving pancakes to a white kid.”

Nell Carter was a series of contradictions and conundrums: Black, Southern, Jewish, Lesbian, Right-Wing Conservative. Carter was a giant talent in a tiny (4’11’’), if expansive frame. Those contradictions in Carter’s personality made her a unique performer. She possessed a little girl voice that was capable of belting to the back row of the balcony. An exponent of stomping Soul or Blues in the tradition of Dinah Washington and Bessie Smith, she could be quiet and heartbreaking singing Mean To Me, a ballad by Fred Ahlert and Roy Turk from 1929.

Carter had a mischievous sense of what was comedic and she used it in both her singing and her acting styles. She was a big girl, but she was light and nimble on her feet. In the classic television special Baryshnikov On Broadway (1980), she shimmied and shuffled, holding her own with the most famous dancer in the world to Honeysuckle Rose.

Carter first received a lot of attention from critics and fans with her Tony Award winning performance in the musical revue of songs by and associated with Fats Walker, Ain’t Misbehavin’ (1978), where she stopped the show nightly. She also won an Emmy Award in 1982 for her performance on a special television broadcast of the Broadway musical.

Carter got interested in cocaine during the run of Ain’t Misbehavin’. She later claimed that at one point, she was spending $2000 a day on drugs. In the mid-1980s her pal Liza Minnelli, like a shimmering guardian angel, personally accompanied Carter to rehab at Hazelden in Minnesota. Carter got clean, and she later said:

“Thank God I got help. God and Liza Minnelli.”

And I thought God was Liza Minnelli.

Carter was cast as Effie in the original production of Michael Bennett’s 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls based upon the show business dreams and triumphs of R&B acts like The Supremes and The Shirelles. She left the production just before rehearsals were to start to take a role on the soap opera Ryan’s Hope. We all know how that turned out.

Carter starred for six seasons playing the “mammy” role to a white family on the off-putting, obnoxious and oddly popular sitcom Gimme A Break!. The cast included a young and closeted Rosie O’Donnell, who fought with Carter on the set.

During the 1990 run of the moppet musical Annie, playing Miss Hannigan, Carter attempted suicide. Even though she had been given a brand new musical number added to the score just for her, she was distraught when ads promoting the show used a different actor, a white actor, as Miss Hannigan. The producers claimed that the commercials, which were made during an earlier production, were too costly to reshoot. Carter cried racism:

“Maybe they don’t want audiences to know Nell Carter is black.”

Carter lived a trouble filled life. Born Nell Ruth Hardy in Birmingham, Alabama, she began performing professionally when she was 11 years old on a weekly radio show in her hometown.

When she was 16 years old, Carter was raped and became pregnant. She give birth to a daughter who was raised by her aunt. Carter moved to NYC when she was 19 years old and found work right away as a nightclub singer appearing at spots like Reno Sweeney’s and The Village Gate.

Carter had always wanted more family, but she experienced three miscarriages. She tried to adopt on two occasions; once the young woman changed her mind and once there was an attempt to get cash by extortionists. In 1989, with her career in an upswing, she successfully adopted two baby boys within months of each other.

She tried to do well for her family, but Carter was dogged by drug and alcohol addictions, two divorces, and she twice had brain surgery to remove an aneurysm. During that time Carter learned she had diabetes. In the late 1980s, her brother died of HIV complications. Troubles aplenty, Carter twice declared bankruptcy.

She picked herself up, got sober again, and found a perfect role in a revival of the 1973 Tony Award winning Raisin, a musical adaptation of Lesbian writer Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin In The Sun (1959). Just as rehearsals began in January 2003, Carter checked-out for good, taken by diabetes, heart disease and heartbreak. She was just 54 years old.

When she left this world, her friends and family were surprised to discover Carter had just $200 in her bank account. They were further shocked to discover that Carter was a lesbian. She had been living with her partner Ann Kaser for more than a 15 years and that custody of her daughter and two sons had been left to Kaser.

The Husband and I saw Carter live on stage in Ain’t Misbehavin’ two times, on Broadway and on tour in Seattle, plus the television version. Her performance was astounding in skill and charisma. Her vocals were hair-raising. I remain a very big fan.

If you don’t know who Mother Flawless Sabrina is, please brush up on your herstory. Read this, then this. And definitely see The QueenFlawless Sabrina is a legendary legend, and one of the great unsung heroes of the LGBT movement. Her life is being archived by WOWlebrity Zackary Drucker who asks us to please post the Booster campaign to help support Flawless Sabrina’s work.

From the Booster campaign:

The mission of Flawless Sabrina Archive is to preserve the lifework of Flawless Sabrina as a resource for artists, activists, and scholars. Flawless Sabrina Archive resides at the convergence of the past and present in countercultural subject matter, enriching society through the documentation of history and the empowerment of difference. The archive includes film, sculpture, writing, photography, painting, and music. Find out more at flawless-sabrina.com

Our design pays tribute to the 100+ times between 1959 and 1969 Flawless Sabrina was arrested for the crime of being a female impersonator, while running a nation-wide drag competition. During this time in history, crossdressing was a felony.

We’ve come a long way since the initial fundraising we did for the FSA, which enabled us to archive a large amount of Flawless Sabrina’s historic materials. As we move forward with a book project to tell the story of Sabrina’s life and career, and aim to eventually find permanent & archival storage for the FSA, everything is currently in a rented storage unit.

The purpose of this fundraiser is to pay for monthly storage on that unit, as well as any additional fees that may arise along the path to finding the FSA a permanent home. We hope to raise enough to pay for storage for the next few years, which will enable us to find the best permanent home for the archive when the time is right. What better way to raise these funds than sell some gorgeous, exclusive t-shirts in honor of our beloved grandma Sabrina!

As if the feeling of helping out wasn’t enough, you also get this super cool shirt that’s available as a baseball tee, a v-neck, or a tank top!

According Towleroad and multiple news sources, transgender actress and activist Alexis Arquette’s death on Sunday at age 47 was due to AIDS-related complications.

When news of Arquette’s death broke on Sunday no specific cause was named, though TMZ suggested that Arquette had been battling an unnamed illness.

Radar Online has sources confirming that Arquette had been battling AIDS:

Alexis was living with AIDS and he had an inoperable tumor and he had developed an infection,” [Arquette’s ex-boyfriend] Robert Dupont explained to Radar.

I was told that went to his liver and throughout his body.

Dupont, who famously ran in Andy Warhol‘s social circles and was a fixture at New York City’s most infamous club, Studio 54, dated Arquette for several years in the 1990s and said she was placed

in an induced coma” before passing away.

You may notice that Dupont is referring to Arquette as “he” as did Alexis’s brother on Sunday. There are many reports that Arquette was living as a man in his final years. On Arquette’s life shortly before his passing, Dupont said,

He was working as an artist and living in an Actors Fund home in West Hollywood for people with HIV and AIDS. He hated it. People kept breaking into his apartment and they did alcohol and drugs. Alexis hated that. He never did drugs and he didn’t drink… His family offered to have him live with them, but he wanted to be independent.

Radar said that,

Towards the end he was in a lot of pain, but he was not going to give up. He was holding on so hard at the end and he was such a fighter. Alexis was sick for so long.

Nearly every show has it share of front row celebs –nothing new. But when Madonna and her model daughter, Lourdes Leon, sat front row at the Alexander Wang show during New York Fashion Week on Saturday, even the cool kids were fan-freaking out. Vogue‘s headline was;

Madonna’s Daughter, Lourdes, Was the Coolest Girl at Alexander Wang

Madge wore a sheer bodysuit under her black Adidas tracksuit by Wang, and Lourdes had on a Wang fluffy sweater (in sweltering, 90 degree heat, btw) with the word STRICT emblazoned on it. Funny, sitting next to your notoriously “strict” Mom. Speaking of
M O M, I never noticed before but she has the word tattooed on her fingers (or depending on the angle, W O W!) Also, D A D which works both ways. Clever girl. What parent would ever object to THOSE two inkings?

#DWTS: 2 Men Arrested After Rushing Ryan Lochte On Stage. Watch

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-2-10-18-am-1Two men were arrested tonight after crashing Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte‘s live debut on Dancing With the Stars.

Police called the incident a “pre-planned”. The two Los Angeles men, Sam Sododeh, 48, and Barzeen Soroudi, 40, rushed the stage area after Lochte’s and Cheryl Burke‘s performance and security tackled them to the ground. The men were audience members, and later changed into anti-Lochte t-shirts to disrupt the broadcast.

Four or five women responsible for anti-Lochte chants of “liar!” were escorted out of the audience, the network said.

Video of the incident posted on Instagram by fellow Olympic swimmer Ed Moses shows security guards pinning down a man and escorting him out, as well as employees making a group of women wearing anti-Lochte T-shirts leave the audience. Moses wrote,

This crap is getting old I love u @ryanlochte and respect you putting yourself out there, you are one of a kind!! … #respect

ABC News reporter Jason Nathanson tweeted a photo from the scene showing two men who were wearing anti-Lochte T-shirts in handcuffs.

Lochte — who’s been trying to rehab his reputation after he “overexaggerated” claims that he and three teammates were robbed at gunpoint during the Summer Olympic Games in Rio.

The incident didn’t appear on camera. The broadcast quickly cut to a commercial as host Tom Bergeron told the audience to “take a breath.” When the show returned from the break, Bergeron explained:

We had to go to break because we had a little incident.

Bergeron then interviewed Lochte and Burke. Lochte said,

I’m doing good. So many feelings are going through my head right now. A little hurt. I came out here and wanted to do something I’m completely not comfortable with, and I did, and I came out here with a big smile.

One of the show’s judges, choreographer Carrie Ann Inaba, was on camera trying to deliver her verdict on the dancers’ performance when the incident occurred. She posted later on Instagram:

no one got hurt. Only positive energy here tonight and always.

And a standing ovation after w "Ryan" chants!!!

Friends of Pulse survivor Chris Brodman said that Brodman died early Sunday morning while visiting the Tampa area. The cause of death is under investigation. Brodman’s friends have posted on social media saying that he passed away while attending a birthday party.

According to News6, the Hillsborough County Sheriff‘s office said that it responded to a home after receiving reports of a man unconscious at about 1:50 AM Sunday.

Pulse survivor, Orlando Torres said that he was first notified through Brodman’s boyfriend that Brodman had passed away. Torres said,

It was supposed to be a fun night. They were supposed to go out there and just, you know, have a fun night out there in Tampa. His boyfriend posted on Facebook, as well as my friend posted on Facebook, that Chris Brodman had passed away.

Torres said that Brodman was given a second chance at life, only to have it cut short just three months after the Pulse shooting.

It’s unfortunate this had to happen to someone that is just so sweet and nice and didn’t deserve it, like anybody else.

News 6 spoke with Brodman on June 21, just nine days after the shooting. Brodman told News 6 how he narrowly escaped Pulse. Brodman said then,

Last call. We went out to the patio to have a cigarette, and we were out there when the shots started to be fired. “I said, ‘Run. Just run, run, run.’ And we all just ran out the bar.

Brodman got a Pulse tattoo after the attack.

The cast of "Transparent"

The cast of “Transparent”

cspthlxw8aahn1z-jpg-large

The latest issue of Out Magazine, Hollywood’s Trans-formation is guest edited by trans couple Zachary Drucker and Rhys Ernst. They explain their mission, thesis and the issue’s theme.

It’s an honor to write to you as the guest editors of Out’s October issue. For those of you who don’t know us, we are artists and filmmakers. We are both trans, but in opposite directions — Zackary is a trans woman, and Rhys is a trans man. We both moved from New York City to Los Angeles to attend CalArts, and we both transitioned at age 25. We have many things in common, but we are also very different. We both identify as queer but have been L, G and/or B at different points in our lives. We are collaborators and colleagues, and were formerly romantic partners. Our new book, Relationship, based on the photographic series we premiered at the 2014 Whitney Biennial, documents our six-year romantic relationship and our gender transitions.

Today we live in Los Angeles and make the shadow of Hollywood our canvas, using palm fronds and bougainvillea as paintbrushes. We like to keep one foot in the art world and one foot in film and television. We are producers on Amazon’s Transparent, brought on in the early days by show creator Jill Soloway to work on the pilot. Rhys makes the title sequence for Transparent (known for its voguing bar mitzvah boy), and you may recognize Zackary as an I Am Cait cast member. Last year, our Web series about trans lives, This Is Me, was nominated for an Emmy. We work in photography and visual art but often use cinematic language and narrative construction as methodologies.

Above all, our ethos is one of uncompromised representation. The intersection of trans representation with the fight for trans equality is our guiding principle, and we’re at the beginning of a long game that’s linked to a timely and larger conversation about diversity in media and in labor. If trans stories are important for all people, exemplifying a journey to live authentically, then trans employment in an industry like Hollywood becomes a symbol of possibility for anyone who’s been historically excluded.

Though they are different, the struggles of LGB people and trans people have more in common than what’s often recognized. The oppression of cisgender LGB people is typically rooted in gender. Throughout history and currently across the globe, the gays and lesbians subjected to discrimination and violence are, more often than not, targeted because of their insubordinance to gender codes. Swishy queens, gay men with “feminine” mannerisms or attributes, bulldaggers, studs, and butch lesbians are all among the many individuals who have blurred the gender binary and paid the price for it. In addition to that, many trans people identify as gay, lesbian, bi, or queer and therefore have an overlapping experience with cis LGB folks (read more about that in our special Surveillance section on how to date a trans person, on page 85).

In other words, trans issues are gay issues, transphobia is homophobia, and homophobia is sexism.

In these pages, you’ll find a look back to the roots of California counterculture led by performance art legend Ron Athey (page 40); an investigative story on the pharmaceutical industry’s nebulous relationship to transgender hormone therapy, written by leading trans journalist Diana Tourjee (page 62); a profile on trans hero and HIV activist Sabel Samone-Loreca penned by non-binary writer and activist Grace Dunham (page 44); and much more.

Trans people need the alliances of our LGB brothers and sisters. We look forward to continuing our shared goal of progress and hope we can rejoice in our collective cultural riches along the way. And we hope that you will enjoy this issue as much as we do.

In solidarity,
Zackary Drucker and Rhys Ernst

September 14th: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Activist, Ben Cohen

ben-cohen-best

September 14, 1978Ben Cohen:

“You can take your top off but you have to keep things respectable.”

I am not personally acquainted with Ben Cohen, but I think I should be.

Cohen is the straight father of eight year old twin girls. He is also a fearsome former rugby player, a 6’ 3’’ powerhouse 2003 World Cup winner, the second highest scorer in English history. Since leaving sports, Cohen devotes his energies full-time to the Ben Cohen Standup Foundation.

In 2000, his father, Peter Cohen, brother of 1966 World Cup winner George Cohen, died after being beaten while coming to the rescue of a man being bullied in the nightclub he owned. After his father’s death, Cohen started his foundation to combat bullying of all types, most especially people who might be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender.

The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation is our pretty planet’s very first organization dedicated to combating of the long-term, damaging effects of bullying, and funding those doing the real work to stop it. I don’t doubt his efforts. His StandUp Foundation helps increase awareness and makes a difference in the lives of the young people who are particularly vulnerable to the hate.

Cohen:

“I believe that every person on this planet has a right to be true to themselves, to love, be loved and to be happy.  That’s what we all want.  I am in a privileged position to be able to spread some important messages across the globe and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I’m passionate about standing up against homophobia and feel compelled to take action.  It is time we stand up for what is right and support young people who are being harmed.”

With his handsome looks and hot bod, Cohen gets attention and he knows it, making it work. He is willing to pose shirtless for photographs and be a calendar boy to get his message out. The fact that he is a famous world-class athlete puts him in a unique position, particularly in the world of sports, for players and for fans.  Remember how closeted gay athletes still are, usually not coming out until after they have retired.

The general public seems willing to pay attention to straight people talking about the intolerance toward and injustices against gay people, more than when we make our own case.  Gay people need to be out of the closet to the whole world, stand up and be brave in the face of hatred, but a compassionate and influential straight guy like Cohen on our side doesn’t hurt.

cohen-ben

For me, Cohen really is a hero. He made the choice to shift his priorities from playing professional sports and earning a nice salary, to adopting a cause not normally supported by someone who is straight.

Cohen:

“We’re on a very simple mission, to create awareness and support organizations and to affect and educate that next generation. We need to teach people to understand that homophobic and racial slurs and bullying is not right. To be part of the impact is fantastic. I think that the most important thing about it is that I’m straight and promoting a foundation that’s anti-homophobia. I’m bridging the gap between gay and straight. I think straight people are more likely to listen when they see me breaking down stereotypes.”

Besides being a straight Gay Hero and Gay Icon, Cohen enjoys motorcycling, but he spends most of his time with the twins. His farm in Northamptonshire keeps him busy with a variety of animals including horses, sheep, old men from Portland and chickens.

Cohen is also hearing-impaired, and he works for Deaf causes as well as LGBTQ ones.

Cohen split with his wife in 2014. He is now dating Russian professional ballroom dancer Kristina Rihanoff, his partner on the 2013 season of Strictly Come Dancing, a sort of British version of Dancing With The Stars. The couple had a baby in January. Apparently, despite wearing a jockstrap, Cohen is not shooting blanks. The British scandal rags have been all over this story.

In 2014, Cohen participated in our own Portland Pride celebrations, making personal appearances and raising funds for anti-bullying efforts. I was unable to secure a visit from him, although I had invited him to The Husband’s Downtown shop, Boys’ Fort, to demonstrate how to handle his balls. I give Ben Cohen an A+ on the Steve Report Card.

“It is all about that next generation and teaching kids so they understand what gay means and the connotations of words like ‘homo’ and ‘faggot’… that whole understanding. I think homophobia is still a problem everywhere. It is the last ‘ism’ – there are still traces of racism and sexism but there is further to go to stamp out homophobia.”

AHS Season 6 Premieres Tonight. So, What IS the Secret Theme? We Have Some Ideas…

screen-shot-2016-09-14-at-6-47-14-am
The sixth season of American Horror Story starts tonight, but audiences are still clueless about the theme. The show broke with tradition by not announcing the season’s title ahead of the first episode. So far, we’ve seen Hotel, Freak Show, Coven, Asylum… but co-creator Ryan Murphy has kept the theme tightly under wraps.

Here’s everything we think we know so far:

Jacob Artist

Jacob Artist

GAGA IS BACK (with some Murphy regulars)
After winning a Golden Globe for her performance in last year’s Hotel, Lady Gaga is back along with Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Matt Bomer and Wes Bentley.

NEW ADDITIONS
Cuba Gooding Jr has been rumored to be joining the cast, while Glee star Jacob Artist revealed on Instagram this week that he would be making an appearance…

IT’S ABOUT MIST
The new title is widely rumored to be “The Mist”, after this title briefly appeared on Rotten Tomatoes and TV Guide. The Mist is also the title of a 15-second teaser for season 6, which shows a mis-shapen, humanoid creature crawling along a set of railway tracks.

IT’S ABOUT CHARLES MANSON
Ryan Murphy has been saying that he wants “to do an entire season about the Manson case” since 2013, and some clues in the promotional material might support this theory.

tmz-croatoan-ahsIT’S ABOUT A LOST COLONIAL TOWN
The word “Croatoan” is seen carved into a tree in photos leaked from the show’s set. This refers to an eerie true mystery. The word appeared on a tree outside the remains of a 17th century colonial settlement of Roanoke in North Carolina, after all the inhabitants had disappeared. AHS has referenced early American history in previous seasons, most notably in Coven, which drew heavily on the Salem Witch Trials.

IT’S PROBABLY ABOUT CHILDREN
According to Murphy, the new season will feature “elements of children”. One teaser features a Children of the Corn-style scene of schoolchildren, working at desks in the middle of a cornfield; another shows a live doll; and another shows a family with a young girl in a prairie landscape.

UNLESS IT’S NOT…
FX has released more than 20 teasers for season six (see them all below) and all but one of them are intended to mislead the viewer. According to FX chief John Landgraf,

One is accurate, all the rest are misdirect.

We know THIS much, as Murphy said earlier this year,

Both things that we’re writing right now — we haven’t yet declared the winner — will have a different form than we’ve ever done, so we’re excited about that.

It’s been hinted that the new season would be

set in two time periods, but principally in the present.

You don’t have long to wait. American Horror Story season 6 premieres tonight on FX. In the meantime, here are all of the teasers you can search for clues.

We had a little internal debate here at The Wow Report on whether we should post this video at all. Friend of WOW, artist Sham Ibrahim shot the footage between 2004 and 2008 and gave permission to post it. It’s very sweet and at times funny and poignant, but so soon after Alexis Arquette‘s death, some may find it a bit morbid. But Alexis was comfortable with the subject matter. You might check what comes up for you, and sit with a minute before you react. It’s profound.

Toni with Adele

In the ’80s Toni Basil choreographed for artists like the Talking Heads and David Bowie and since then she’s been dancing and judging international street dance competitions. (She had a hit of her own in the 80s, Mickey.

This summer, she attended a workshop held by French dancer Babson Baba Sy. When he realized who she was, he called her to the front of the class to perform for everyone… after this video went viral, Basil said,

I’ve always been a dancer, and I will always be a dancer. Dance has been my lover, my doctor. I know I have my health because of this.

Basil said the best way to stay as fit as she is is to,

start dancing immediately. Run to the closest dance studio, and study the style of dance of the music you love. If you love hip-hop music, go to a hip-hop class. If you love salsa, take a salsa class. It will become infectious and you’ll keep going back.

It seems to be working. Again, she is 72!
